Tips on Becoming Conversational in a Language

While attending Oberlin College in Ohio, Andrew Whiteman of Michigan studied German. Previously a student of German at Royal Oak High School in Michigan, Andrew Whiteman is now conversational in the language. During high school, he travelled to Germany with other students through the German American Partnership Program.

When learning a new language, practice is key. Experienced language learners suggest a minimum of an hour per day of using the language in a focused manner. This means speaking it to other people in a back-and-forth situation where you need to communicate something in particular. Ideally, the person you are conversing with will help you to fill in any gaps in your knowledge. Each learning moment will boost your conversational abilities.

According to US News and World Report, friendships with native speakers also play a key role in becoming conversational. Social interactions help you as a language learner to integrate the language with the culture and respond more effectively to social cues. Native-speaking friends may also be willing to give you tips and pronunciation corrections to help you along. And while entertainment is no substitute for human interaction, watching movies and television shows in the language you are learning also provides you with insight into the culture and how native speakers use the language.

Red Kangaroos at the Detroit Zoo

As a volunteer at the Detroit Zoo, Andrew Whiteman of Michigan enjoys leading visitors through the Australian Outback exhibit. Andrew Whiteman has worked in zoos since 2009, when he accepted his first internship at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

At the Detroit Zoo, more than 20 red kangaroos roam the Australian Outback Adventure. These animals delight with their reddish brown fur and the slightly blue hue of the female of the species. Their powerful legs allow them to run at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour and leap 6 feet in the air or 25 feet along the ground; their strong tails and short forearms help them to balance as they move; a pouch on the belly of the female keeps babies safe.

At the Detroit Zoo, many of these animals belong to a single family. The oldest, Sidney II, was born in 1996 and had her first baby in 2001. This baby, known as Alice, has two white toes and a daughter called Stirling. Two-year-old Stirling recently had her own joey, and the family enjoys bouncing around its open habitat together.

Learning German – Tips for Beginners

A graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, Andrew Whiteman resides in Royal Oak, Michigan. A Michigan native, Andrew Whiteman is conversational in German, a language he learned while participating in a student exchange program.

Like English, German has West Germanic origins linguistically. It was also influenced by Latin and Greek. Fortunately, for beginners whose first language is English, German possesses numerous cognates that ease the learning process. In linguistics, cognates are words that are similar in spelling and pronunciation. Some examples of German cognates include der Garten for garden, and das Haus for house.

A German-English dictionary is a good resource when beginning to learn the language. Individuals should purchase a comprehensive volume that contains at minimum 40,000 entries. Useful for translation, a dictionary also helps a person practice German writing and to learn proper pronunciation. Other useful tips for learning German include striving to use the language in everyday situations to improve conversational skills, and endeavoring to learn nouns simultaneously with their corresponding, gender-related, definite articles.

High and Low German

An alumnus of Oberlin College in Ohio, Andrew Whiteman is a native of Michigan. Growing up, Mr. Whiteman and his family hosted a German exchange student through the German American Partnership Program. Andrew Whiteman developed an interest in German culture and left Michigan for Germany following his sophomore year in high school. He lived with a German family for a month and became fluent in the language.

With history dating back to first century BCE, German is the primary language of Austria and Germany. It is also one of three official languages spoken in Switzerland. A part of the West Germanic group of the Indo-European language family, the German language possesses many dialects that belong to either the High or Low German groups.

Derived from the Middle German dialect used by Martin Luther in his translation of the Bible, the modern standard of High German is utilized throughout higher education, administration, and literature. This professional form of German speech can also be found in the mass media in Low German dialect groups.

Low German is used through the lowlands of northern Germany. Its origin consists of Old Saxon and Middle Low German speech utilized by the Hanseatic League. Unlike High German, there is no formal standard when applying the dialect group to administrative and literary works.

Biology Study at Oberlin College

A graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, Andrew Whiteman of Michigan received his undergraduate degree in biology and religion. Michigan’s Andrew Whiteman participated in a number of research efforts while at Oberlin, including a study of the regulatory elements involved in muscle contraction.

At Oberlin College, the biology major learns foundational concepts of science as well as how to apply these concepts in an experimental setting. By graduation, students have developed a working knowledge of the scientific process and professional procedures for communicating results with colleagues. Oberlin places particular emphasis on the interplay between sciences, and to this end, it instills in students a knowledge of how their work impacts the world around them.

Students develop these skills in the context of a focused bachelor’s degree program that includes general and specialized coursework as well as cognate studies in other disciplines. All biology majors complete core courses in organismal biology and in the relationship between genetic evolution and the environment, as well as in molecular and cell biology. Students may then select from two other lecture courses, one of which must include lab work, as well as two upper-level courses that may include such topics as systems ecology, biochemistry, or paleobiology. All students round out their study with additional laboratory work as well as study in chemistry, and they may also study advanced mathematics or computer science.

An Introduction to SPSS

A graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, where he studied religion and biology, Andrew Whiteman of Michigan has also developed fluency in Microsoft programs as well as IBM software such as SPSS. Michigan’s Andrew Whiteman developed these skills during his undergraduate studies, which prepared him for his intended career in the life sciences.

SPSS, or Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, supports scientific research by allowing users to analyze data on multiple levels. SPSS first asks the user to define the variables that he or she will use in the study. Each of these variables represents a particular characteristic of the subject to be studied. For example, a marketing study may elect to look at a consumer’s age, marital status, or education level when predicting purchase behaviors.

SPSS users enter variable data to create individual cases. They may then run the program to analyze relationships among the variables and identify patterns, anomalies, or likely future outcomes. SPSS then uses the case data that the user has entered to create charts, graphs, and other tools for data reporting. Because the program categorizes data in a number of ways, the user may customize these reports to emphasize particular elements.

How Bilingual Employees Benefit the Workplace

Michigan resident Andrew Whiteman relocated to Ohio to attend Oberlin College. In 2012, he graduated with a bachelor of arts in biology. Returning home to Michigan, the graduate began volunteering for the Detroit Zoo. Andrew Whiteman is fluent in German and seeks a position in the field of biology.

In 2012, it was estimated that nearly 41 million immigrants lived in the United States, which at the time equated to 13% of the population. In light of this statistic, it is clear that bilingual employees bring strong benefits to the workplace. Serving more than the need to communicate with customers, they have become a key element in establishing long-lasting business relationships in foreign countries. These individuals can serve as interpreters during meetings as well as be a resource for discovering new client pools.

Being fluent in more than one language is helpful in many fields, including education, healthcare, financial services, and sales. In particular, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that social service occupations are showing an increased need for bilingual employees. However, with the growing number of immigrants and opportunities to expand business activities abroad, bilingualism can be shown to be beneficial in all industries.
